Reading my water meter

There are different reasons why you may want to read your own water meter.

  • You may want to check how much water you are using.
  • You may be trying to detect a leak.
  • You may need to provide us with a reading so we can send you an accurate bill.
  • You may want to verify the accuracy of the reading on your water bill.

Locating your meter

Usually your meter will be located close to the front of the property, often just inside the front fence near a garden tap.

If you can’t locate your meter, you can log in to MyAccount for more information or contact us to help locate the meter on your property.

Mechanical water meters

How to read a mechanical meter

  1. Match the meter to your account - Locate the meter number etched into the front of the meter. This number should match the meter number located on the back of your water bill.
  2. Read the meter - Once you’ve located your meter, read the black numbers from left to right. Most meters have black and red numbers. The numbers in the black and white section represent kilolitres (1000 litres) and the red section represent litres.

If you’re sending us your reading for billing purposes, you only need to send the numbers in the black and white section.

Digital water meters

Before reading your water meter, it's useful to know if you have a Sagemcom or a Huizhong meter. Both brands use ultrasonic technology, but they have some differences. Sagemcom meters are green and will usually have the Sagemcom logo or the word Siconia, with a sleek digital display.

Huizhong meters are white or blue and are typically marked with the Huizhong brand and may show an IP68 rating, indicating they are designed for tough environments. Use these quick identifiers to recognise which meter you have so you can follow the corresponding instructions below.

New digital water meters (Sagemcom)

Your meter will usually be located close to the front of the property, often just inside the front fence near a garden tap.

How to read a Sagemcom water meter

  1. Match the meter to your account - Open the meter's lid and take note of the badge number located below the blue button. This number should match the meter number located on the back of your water bill.
  2. Activate the meter - Briefly tap the blue button. After a few moments the screen will activate and will display a series of numbers.
  3. How to use the meter – The numbers on the screen show the volume of water you have used to date. The underlined numbers represent how many kilolitres (1,000 litres) or cubic meters (m3) have been used. The numbers to the right of the decimal point represent single litres. If the screen looks different to this, scroll through the screens by tapping the blue button until you reach the screen showing underlined numbers and cubic metres.
  4. Read the meter - If we’ve asked you to send us a meter reading for billing purposes, you only need to send the underlined numbers (cubic metres / kilolitres).
  5. Close the meter - Close the lid so the meter is protected.

Huizhong digital water meter

Your meter will usually be located close to the front of the property, often just inside the front fence near a garden tap.

How to read a Huizhong water meter

  1. Activate the meter - Once you’ve located your water meter, open its cover by pressing down on the top and lifting the tab at the front.
  2. Match the meter to your account - Take note of the badge number located below the digital screen on the right. This number should match the meter number located on the back of your water bill.
  3. How to use the meter - You’ll need to scroll through several data screens until you see the one displaying ‘kL’ below the numbers.
  4. Find your usage data - To scroll through the data screens, simply hold your thumb over the triangle of light holes on the water meter. You’ll see the data screen changes every few seconds.
  5. Read the meter - At the ‘kL’ data screen, you’ll see some numbers. The numbers before the decimal point represent kilolitres (1,000 litres). If you’re sending us your reading for billing purposes, you only need to send the numbers before the decimal point. You don’t need to include the numbers after the decimal point (those which have a black border around them).
  6. Close the meter - Close the lid so the meter is protected.
