Bald Hill transfer new water supply

A new Bald Hill transfer water supply is providing water from Yan Yean Reservoir to people in some of Melbourne’s northern suburbs. This will increase water supply for a growing population.

We’ve added a new water supply to ensure you have high-quality drinking water on tap when you need it. This means more water is available to supply more people moving into the area.

Bald Hill transfer supplies water from Yan Yean Reservoir. Your drinking water passes stringent water quality standards, to ensure it’s safe and pleasant tasting.

Parts of the suburbs below will receive the new Yan Yean water supply:

  • Beveridge
  • Donnybrook
  • Kalkallo
  • Mickleham
  • Wallan

People living and working in these areas received water from Greenvale Reservoir before. Greenvale is still supplying water for Melbourne suburbs and may also be part of your water supply from time to time.

In total, 10 major reservoirs supply water across Melbourne and all water is treated to stringent water quality standards – so you receive safe, reliable and high-quality water wherever you live.

You may notice a slight change in the way your water looks, tastes or smells. This is normal because water comes from different water sources.

We’re fortunate in Melbourne that all of our water supplies are treated to high water quality standards and provide safe, pleasant drinking water straight from the tap.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I getting water from the Bald Hill transfer now?

Melbourne Water and Yarra Valley Water have worked together to increase the water supply by commissioning the new Bald Hill transfer, which distributes water from Yan Yean Reservoir. This provides more water into the water supply system for a growing population in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

Adding Bald Hill transfer to our water supply system, and distributing water from Yan Yean Reservoir, increases the water we can provide to Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs. Bald Hill transfer will supply more water to more people living and working in Beverage, Donnybrook, Kalkallo, Mickleham and Wallan.

Is it safe to drink?

Yes, the water is safe to drink. The Yan Yean Reservoir is a major water supply source that can supply residents and businesses via Bald Hill transfer in the suburbs we’ve set out above.

The source of your water may be different if you live or work in these suburbs, but the water is still treated to the same drinking water quality standards as your previous water supply.

Why does my water appear different?

A change in water source can sometimes mean your water looks, smells or tastes slightly different. This is because it comes from a different place. It is still safe to drink and use as normal.

Water from Yan Yean Reservoir is typically clear or blue in colour, your previous water supply from Greenvale Reservoir can look yellow – this is due to natural minerals in the reservoir. These differences are normal.

All water sources in Melbourne are high quality, safe and reliable.

Will the water smell more like chlorine?

No. We add chlorine to water as part of the water treatment process. The chlorination levels are within the same range as other sources of water in the Melbourne area.

Will running taps or boiling water help with changes in smell, taste or appearance?

No, you may notice a slight change but boiling the water won’t change the way it tastes. Your water supply is treated to the same drinking water quality standards as all water in our service area.

Why haven't you communicated this to me?

At times we need to change where we supply water from. This is something we manage on behalf of our customers to ensure there is enough water to supply everyone we need to.

More information is available on our website at www.yvw.com.au/yan-yean

Why am I getting a different water supply but a neighbour is not?

Different areas around Melbourne will be serviced by different water tanks. The location of these different service areas can mean neighbours living across the street get their water from different places. This can mean close neighbours can be affected differently when we have a change or a disruption to water supply.

Yan Yean Reservoir has been used before and I didn’t like the taste. What’s different now?

The water from Yan Yean is treated with new treatment processes. All of the water we supply passes stringent water quality standards so we can supply safe and pleasant tasting drinking water.
