New water supply for Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs
The Bald Hill transfer system, now in operation, ensures residents and businesses have access to a reliable and high-quality water supply as the region continues to expand.
The addition of the Bald Hill transfer means there is now more water readily available to support the demands of a growing population. This new system has been delivered by Melbourne Water and complements existing infrastructure, offering a robust supply of drinking water that meets stringent quality standards for safety and taste.
Over 77,500 residents in parts of Beverage, Donnybrook, Kalkallo, Mickleham and Wallan are receiving water from Yan Yean Reservoir. This marks a shift from the previous Greenvale Reservoir supply, which continues to provide water to Melburnians and may still be part of the water supply in these northern areas as needed.
Yarra Valley Water’s General Manager Asset Services, Bridie Fennessy, said the Bald Hill transfer marks an important step in ensuring Melbourne’s growing communities have secure access to safe, reliable drinking water. “We’re committed to delivering high-quality water on tap for our communities, and adding the Yan Yean to Bald Hill transfer system is one of the many ways we can meet future demands,” Ms Fennessy said.
Melbourne is served by ten major reservoirs, each held to rigorous water quality standards, ensuring that every household and business has access to safe, clean water wherever they live.
The Bald Hill transfer system reinforces both Yarra Valley Water’s and Melbourne Water’s dedication to supporting sustainable growth in Melbourne’s suburbs while preserving water quality and reliability for generations to come.
