Yarra Valley Water invites the community to support a reimagined Tarralla Creek
Yarra Valley Water is working in partnership to deliver a sustainable water supply to sportsgrounds in Maroondah through Reimagining Tarralla Creek Project. The community can also support this enhancement project and celebrate the new family-friendly open space at a community planting day on Sunday 15 May, 10am to 12noon.
Melbourne Water, together with Yarra Valley Water, Maroondah City Council and the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning began work to reimagine a two-kilometre section of Tarralla Creek in Croydon in 2018.
With $310,000 funding from Yarra Valley Water, the partnership project has converted an existing piped stormwater channel into a naturalised waterway and family-friendly open space. With its new bridge and upgraded shared paths, it improves accessibility and safety, and is a place where people can connect nature and its improved biodiversity.
The community can also have a hand in improving this stretch of the creek and are invited to bring their gardening gloves and help to plant over 300 native plants.
The Tarralla Creek Community Planting Day is part of Maroondah Council’s Celebrate Maroondah series, hosted in partnership with Melbourne Water and Friends of Tarralla Creek. Roving performers, a wildlife display, film screening and the Karralyka KarraVan pop-up performance space will be there on the day and people can enjoy face painting, a free sausage sizzle and coffee (BYO takeaway cup).
The event starts at 10am on the Fred Geale Oval carpark, Norton Road, with a Film screening at Celebrate Maroondah - Regenerating Australia. The short film features a host of well-known Australian faces, Regenerating Australia is a 17-minute short film based on a four month ‘listening campaign’ with a diverse group of Australians who shared their hopes and dreams for the country’s future.
Projects like Reimagining Tarralla Creek provide opportunities for Yarra Valley Water and our Integrated Water Management partners to participate in high-value projects that benefit the community and natural environment. It has facilitated the harvesting of 13ML of stormwater for use on Council’s parklands.
Work on Stage 1, from Norton Road to Vinter Avenue and including the Croydon Wetlands, is now complete, transforming a 500-metre section into a natural oasis for the community to enjoy.
