Sewerage Network Improvements
Yarra Valley Water's sewerage system has been designed and constructed with significant additional capacity to contain peaks in daily flows and after heavy rainfall.
However, in extreme storm events, wastewater flows can exceed the system’s capacity, resulting in diluted sewage being discharged at overflow points via Emergency Relief Structures (ERS).
We have upgraded two Emergency Relief Structures (ERS) and installed screens at three sites to ensure we continue to provide a safe and reliable sewerage service for customers and protect the environment.
These sewerage network improvement projects were completed by July 2020.
Great Ryrie Street Ringwood, ERS
During the June 2020 school holidays, we upgraded the ERS on Great Ryrie Street Ringwood, at the entrance to Aquinas College and replaced the digital meter.
Works started on Friday 26 June and were completed by Monday 13 July 2020 by our contractor Interflow.

Emergency Relief Structure Screens
To reduce the impact from sewer spills in extreme storm events, we installed new screens at three Emergency Relief Structure sites. These are:
- Adjacent to 24 Harding Street, Coburg
- At the intersection of Rollo and Sussex streets, Pascoe Vale.
- Adjacent to 46 Hope Street, Brunswick.
The new screens will isolate, capture and store solids within the sewer and then, when flows recede, the solid waste is discharged back into the sewer.
This work was completed by specialist contractors, Interflow, on behalf of Yarra Valley Water.
What’s involved
To enable access to the sewerage system to install the screens, a new maintenance hole was constructed within local roads at each site.
This civil work will be completed Monday to Friday, from 7am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm.
The screen will be tested and commissioned, and the construction area reinstated.
Work took approximately 3 weeks and is now complete at:
- Harding Street Coburg
- Rollo Street Pascoe Vale
- Hope Street Brunswick
